What is A Piping Expansion Joint

An expansion joint is installed in piping systems for a couple of reasons. Not only can they be used to absorb vibrations and shock, they can also be used to relieve anchor stress, reduce noise, and compensate for misalignment. Certain expansion joints are also designed for thermal expansion in very hot applications.

Expansion joints allow pipes to move in three different ways:
  • Axial compression or extension
  • Lateral offset
  • Angular deflection
  • They typically come in three different materials to cover a variety of applications.

Metal - Metal expansion joints are mostly used in applications where thermal expansion is an issue. When the temperature of the pipe increases, the metal expansion joint compresses to compensate for the movement, taking stress off the anchors and the pipe. A metal expansion joint is a prime example of how to handle expanding hot pipes.

Rubber - Rubber can be used for thermal expansion, and it also absorbs vibration and shock waves extremely well. That's why this type of expansion joint is great for minimizing the transmission of noise, vibration from other equipment to protect equipment like pumps. They also work as shock absorbers to minimize trauma caused by water hammer, pressure surges, and seismic events (not that we get a lot of earthquakes in Wisconsin...).

Braided - Braided stainless hoses with flexible or metal liners aren't technically an expansion joint, more of a flexible connector. They work well in high pressure and temperature applications requiring vibration dampening or pipe misalignments.

These are often used on pumps and other equipment to help eliminate thrust load on the equipment nozzles due to thermal expansion. Eliminating that load is critical to pump performance.

Braids provide lateral an angular movement. They also absorb vibration rather well.

  • Which Factors to Consider When Selecting a Valve

Aloyco Stainless Steel Gate ValveChoosing a valve for a certain application isn't a beginner's task. Sometimes an incorrect valve can be selected if you aren't careful. So, what do you need to know to begin your search for the right valve?

    Know Your Process Conditions

Without knowing or sharing the process conditions, the wrong type of valve could be selected. For example, a customer requests a globe valve without sharing their process conditions. Unknown to our engineers, the customer's application needs a large capacity of flow that would perform better with a butterfly or ball valve. Problems might arise in the future with the capacity of the globe valve. This is why it is critical to know the process conditions. A valve can only be guaranteed when all of the process conditions are known!

    Identify your Valve Function

You must know how your valve will function in your application. Is it normally open? Normally closed? Do you need to use it to control flow? Is it a 2-way, 3-way, or multipurpose valve? We can help you identify your valve function if you are unsure. Knowing the process conditions of the valve is crucial.

If you're still not sure how to select a valve, contact us! Our experienced engineers are happy to help you find the proper valve for your applications.

Do You Know Which Time Need to Change A Load Rope

Safety should be your primary consideration when it comes to handling lifting equipment. When you do not practise adequate care to minimise risk elements, you put your life and others' lives at risk and this is the last thing that you will want to be affected with. Fatalities at work sites are commonly caused by dropped loads and needless to mention, such incidents can be attributed to the use of excessively worn load chain and ropes. While timely inspection and maintenance can prevent mishaps, the fact is that even a little bit of negligence can reverse situations and cause irrecoverable damages.

UK law requires companies to inspect above the hook equipment every 12 months whereas the equipment that is used more intensely should be examined on a frequent basis. It is quite easy to inspect load chains and a visual inspection on a daily basis may help you notice the danger signs. Check if the diameter of the rope looks worn. While this is one of the most obvious signs, you should look for other signs such as splintering and kinking. If you spot a minor splintering, monitor it regularly so that you can prevent an imminent accident. If the splintering appears to be substantial, you need to replace the existing rope with a new rope.

When it comes to inspecting chains, you need to adopt a slightly different approach. The lower inside half of the chain link is subjected to most wear and tear as this is the area that faces the maximum amount of pressure. Excessive wear is often attributed to the lack of lubrication to the inner sides of the links. There can be a lot of doubts and questions during inspection which may put you in a "change-not change" dilemma. The best way to deal with such scenarios is to eliminate your doubt completely. Change - if you think that this will reduce risk, save lives, and give you peace of mind.

When searching for a reliable supplier for a new load rope, regardless of the manufacturer, size or complexity Cranes-UK are the UK's premier crane servicing company offering nationwide support, installation and global supply of crane components, give them a call or visit their informative website for further details.

  • Which Major Considerations Need to be Considered When You Buy A Winch

With the cost of a winch ranging from 100 pounds to thousands of pounds, you may find it hard to select a winch that not only suits your budget, but serves your purpose as well. There are a few major considerations that one should take into account when you purchase a winch so that you feel good about your investment at the end of the day. Think about your intended usage before you determine how much winch you exactly need. You also need to have knowledge about the purpose and safe use of winch accessories. As a rule of thumb, winch rating is calculated by multiplying the gross load weight by 1.5. The product indicates your minimum winch size. However, this is just the minimum rating and there may be situations that may demand your winch capacity to be exceeded. Hence, you should carefully determine usage before you make a choice.

Secondly, your choice of winch motor should also be determined by the frequency and intensity of use. Light duty winching and permanent magnet motors work well together whereas heavier and more frequent winching will demand the use of a Series Wound winch. Hydraulic winches are an appropriate option if you winch throughout the day regularly and beyond any electrical winch's capability. The weight of the winch may be one of your primary considerations and the dimensions of your winch may also influence your choice as well as the orientation of which it is mounted and the rope deploys. Winches may come with an Integrated or Remote Solenoid Pack and each option has its own set of advantages, including their ability to reduce the space required to mount the winch.

Read the manufacturer's warranty thoroughly to be aware of the warranty coverage time and other terms and conditions. Consider serviceability as a vital decision-making criterion as you need to ensure that you find a service centre whenever you need it most. You will surely not want to spend your time hunting down hard to find replacements of broken parts after the warranty period expires.

The Industrial Mixer Is Noisy! What's Wrong?

A noisy industrial mixer is usually not a healthy mixer. If you're hearing abnormal noises coming from your mixer, there is probably a larger underlying issue. Let's go over a few common culprits and their respective fixes.

    LOOSE FOUNDATION BOLTS

Mixer foundation bolts should not be vibrating, shaking, or visibly loose. If they are, you might have a weak mounting structure or loose hold down bolts. To fix this, first inspect the mounting point of the reducer. If you find loose bolts, tighten them as necessary. Otherwise you might have an unstable mounting structure that needs to be reinforced.

    BEARING FAILURE

If you can't find any loose bolts or a problem with the mounting structure, you should check your bearings. Bearing failure can occur when the bearing is overloaded or isn't getting enough lubricant.

Check the rated capacity of the reducer and make sure you're not overworking the bearing. If the capacity is in check, you might need to replace the bearing. When the bearing is replaced, be sure to clean and flush the reducer and fill with recommended lubricant.

    INSUFFICIENT LUBRICATION

If the level of lubricant inside the reducer is not properly maintained, your industrial mixer will make noise. It is important that the mixer itself is sufficiently lubricated. Be sure to check the lubrication level and adjust to recommended level.

It is also important that the correct lubrication is used. If the wrong lubrication is being used, flush it out and refill it with the correct lubricant as recommended.

Noise is your industrial mixer's way of telling you something is wrong. Pay attention to its subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) queues, to correct the issues and ensure your mixer gives your process the best mix for a long time to come.

EastMachinery Tell you Why Choose a Positive Displacement Pump

The decision to choose a positive displacement pump over a centrifugal is not always a clear one. They each have very different behaviors and if not familiar with them, it may be difficult to understand how a positive displacement pump could fit into your process.

Positive displacement pumps are a more efficient choice than centrifugal pumps in some situations. If any of the conditions or applications below are in your process, a positive displacement pump should probably be used.

    1, HIGH VISCOSITY

Centrifugals have issues pumping viscous liquids, becoming very inefficient at even modest levels. Positive displacement pumps, on the other hand, have no problem moving thick liquids.

    2, LOW FLOW

Oftentimes, a centrifugal pump is run off its BEP when a lower flow is desired, much to the pump's detriment. If you read our previous post "How To Read a Centrifugal Pump Curve", you'll recall that running a centrifugal off its BEP can cause excessive energy consumption, damage to the pump, and overall poor performance.

A positive displacement pump, however, is well suited for these conditions, providing constant flow of fluid at a given pump speed. If you're trying to get the pressure or flow you need by operating a centrifugal pump off its best efficiency point (BEP), a positive displacement pump may be a better choice.

    3, METERING

Positive displacement pumps are an ideal choice for metering applications. They deliver constant flow, allowing them to easily meet process requirements. Some common types of positive displacement pumps used for metering are:

  • Peristaltic
  • Gear
  • Diaphragm
  • Plunger
  • Piston
  • 4, HIGH PRESSURE REQUIREMENTS

Positive displacement pumps are excellent for applications that require high pressure, with some models producing over 1,000 psi (2,300 ft). Due to the positive displacement pump's design however, if kept in operation against a closed discharge valve, it will continue to build pressure until the line bursts, the pump is damaged, or both.

    5, SHEAR SENSITIVE LIQUIDS

Centrifugal pumps generally operate at higher speeds when compared to positive displacement pumps. the higher speeds can shear liquids, making centrifugal pumps a poor choice for liquids like tomato paste and latex paint. Positive displacement pumps operating at lower speeds can be more gentle on products, and are usually preferred in these types of applications.

Centrifugal pumps and positive displacement pumps behave very differently. Understanding their behaviors can help you be sure to choose the right one for your application.

  • Failed Mechanical Seal Puts Cold Storage Facility Hot On The Trail For Solution

A company specializing in temperature-controlled warehousing and logistics for the food industry recognized an issue concerning a failed mechanical seal on a Goulds 3196 ammonia pump. Being that ammonia pumps are critical to maintaining temperatures at a cold storage facility, identifying the problem and appropriate solution was dire. In conjunction with the facility's Maintenance department, the engineering and service teams at Crane Engineering worked tirelessly to troubleshoot and identify the right solution.

This cold storage facility has two primary pumps used to maintain temperature throughout the facility. One of these pumps experienced catastrophic seal failure less than one year after it was replaced by the customer. To make things worse, the other critical pump wasn't doing much better as it slowly leaked as well. The customer was in a tough situation as it was now June and the weather was really starting to heat up – making it even more difficult to maintain the cold temperatures. Time was running out.

Instead of simply installing a new seal, the team at Crane Engineering made the decision to troubleshoot and determine why the customer-installed seal failed in under one year. Oftentimes there is an underlying cause for seal failures, especially when they happen within a short period of time. It was determined that seal selection was not the issue, this style of seal is commonly used across the cold storage industry and is widely accepted due to its reliability.

    THE SOLUTION

The pump was disassembled by Crane Engineering's service team in Kimberly, Wisconsin. The condition of critical parts was assessed to determine if replacing the seal would fix the problem. With a number of components showing significant wear, it was determined that replacing the seal would only be a temporary solution, as the worn components directly impact the overall reliability of the seal.

A Crane Engineering Account Manager also noticed the seal's piping plan wasn't ideal as it sloped in the wrong direction with tight 90 degree elbows instead of gentle slopes. A proper pipe installation method was discussed and necessary changes were made to ensure adequate lubrication.

    THE RESULTS

The pump repair and installation took a total of two days. A number of causes for the shortened seal life were found, and necessary components on the pump were either repaired or replaced. Since then, the pump has operated flawlessly, and the facility came out with a greater depth of knowledge on the subject. Root cause analysis of the failed mechanical seal helped to ensure maintenance personnel could extend the life of their pumps minimizing costs associated with repeated mechanical seal failure.
